BackJack Benefits

ACTION: Begin by double clicking the BJ icon found in your BackJack folder.

When you launch BackJack for the first time you will be guided through our Easy Setup procedures. The purpose is to allow you to enter pertinent information that you will need to use BackJack. As well, it will take you step by step through a very simple backup configuration.

Easy Setup will only appear the first time you launch BackJack. Welcome Screen

The first screen you come to will be the Welcome Screen. Here, we simply need to verify whether this is your first time installing BackJack or whether you are re-installing a previous version after having backed up some files. For example, after a disaster such as fire, theft or a hard drive crash.

ACTION: Please click the appropriate radio button. Once you have done this, click NEXT to continue. If you click DONE at this point, you will receive a message indicating that you are about to leave Easy Setup without setting up your Encryption Key. You will have the option of quitting and finishing Easy Setup at a later time or continuing on with the Easy Setup process.

Identification Screen

The second Easy Setup screen you come to will be the Identification Screen.

Here, we require you to personalize your copy of the program. You will be asked to enter four (4) pieces of information. The following table describes the entries you see when setting up your identification for BackJack:

In this box Type
Account Identification The identification number that we emailed to you once you completed the online registration form - if you did not receive an email from us once you registered, please contact us. This field must be completed before you can continue on from this screen.
Password The password that you entered during the online registration process
Computer Identification A name of your choice (ie. joemachine) - names as opposed to numbers are recommended. This simply identifies your computer and must be UNIQUE (no one else can have the same computer ID). No spaces are permitted in this field.
Email Address Your email address - This is the address to which we will send confirmation of backups. Please ensure that you enter a valid email address in the form of myname@host.com.

Note

We strongly recommend that you keep this information written down for future reference. For your convenience, we have developed an Information Summary Form. Please print and complete this form once you have completed the Easy Setup process, so that you have a record of this information should you need it for future reference.

ACTION: Once you have entered this information, click NEXT to continue. If you click DONE at this point, you will receive a message indicating that you are about to leave Easy Setup without setting up your Encryption Key. You will have the option of quitting and finishing Easy Setup at a later time or continuing on with the Easy Setup process.

Encryption Key Setup Screen

The third Easy Setup screen you now see is the Encryption Key Setup Screen. It is here that an encryption key will be established for you which will be used by BackJack to encrypt and decrypt files on your computer.

Note

BackJack offers two ways to set up your encryption key - a Standard or Advanced method. BackJack defaults to the Standard method (window shown below); however, you may choose to use the Advanced method if you have the ability to get the key off your hard drive and keep it in a safe, off-site location. Copying the key to a floppy is easiest, so the Advanced method may not be suitable for iMac users.

Standard Encryption Key Setup ...

- requires that you enter a pass phrase which you must remember!
- this pass phrase is all that is needed to decrypt files on your computer in the event of a disaster
- if the pass phrase is found or known by someone else, they have the ability to access your information
- uses 128-bit CAST encryption technology

Advanced Encryption Key Setup ...

- requires that you enter a phass phrase which you must remember!
- once you do this, a key is randomly generated for you which must be copied to a floppy disk and stored off site
- both the pass phrase and the key would be required to decrypt your files in the event of a disaster
- this method provides an added level of protection because of this; however, it puts more responsibility on you as a user since you are required to store the key off site and be able to produceboth it and the pass phrase in the event of a disaster
- uses 128-bit CAST encryption technology

Standard Encryption Key Setup

ACTION: Here are the steps you need to follow to generate your key:

In this box Type
Pass Phrase

A pass phrase that can be up to a maximum of 100 characters in length. The pass phrase will be used to decrypt your files. Enter a phrase that is easy for you to remember, but hard for someone else to guess. DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASS PHRASE - if it is lost, so are your files!

When entering a pass phrase, many people find it easiest to remember a favorite phrase like "Jack and Jill went up the hill" It is not case sensitive so Jack and Jill is the same as JACK AND JILL. The longer the phrase, the better.

Verify Pass Phrase Once you have entered your pass phrase, we ask that you verify it by entering it again.

ACTION: Once you have entered this information, click Next. If you click Done you will see a message indicating that you are about to leave the Easy Setup process without completing all of the windows. You will have the option to continue and configure the remaining settings from the Preferences window (from Main BackJack console) or you may quite BackJack now and finish the Easy Setup the next time you launch it. Cancelling with return you to the Easy Setup so that you can continue on.

ADVANCED ENCRYPTION KEY SETUP (to be used only if you decide not to use BackJack's default Standard Encryption Key Setup method)

Why use the Advanced Method?

- if you are able to get the key off your hard drive and keep it in a safe, off-site location
- if you are okay with the fact that you will be required to produce not only the pass phrase but also this key to decrypt your files in the event of a disaster

If you decide that you want to use the Advanced encryption key setup, then you can access this screen by going back to the Identification Screen (just by pressing PREVIOUS). Once there, simply press the OPTION key on your keyboard and clicking on the NEXT button from the Standard Encryption Key Setup screen (screen 2 of Easy Setup). You will then see the screen shown below.

Note

If you move on from this screen (to the Easy Setup (3 of 4)) and need to return to the Advanced Encryption Key Setup page, then you must press the OPTION key on your keyboard and click on the PREVIOUS button.

ACTION: Once you have entered this information, click Generate Unique Key. You will see a message confirming that your key has been generated. However, it is important at this point to KEEP ADDITIONAL COPIES OF YOUR KEY!

If you click Done you will see a message indicating that you are about to leave the Easy Setup process without completing all of the windows. You will have the option to continue and configure the remaining settings from the Preferences window (from Main BackJack console) or you may quit BackJack now and finish the Easy Setup the next time you launch it. Cancelling with return you to the Easy Setup so that you can continue on.

We recommend that you copy the key onto a floppy before quitting this screen. For your convenience, we have included this function directly below the 'generate unique key' button.

ACTION: Go ahead and click on Copy Key to Floppy Disk. Insert a floppy and proceed to copy the document entitled "Encrypt.Key" to your floppy.

As a safeguard, we recommend that you store your key in several locations. First, you should have a copy on at least one floppy that sits close to your computer for quick convenient access. Second, make a copy somewhere on your computer (preferably a different hard disk than the one BJ is on). Third, and most importantly, you should have a copy of the key on separate floppies placed into a safety deposit box (OFFSITE!).

Note

Before moving on from this screen, please make sure that you have made a copy of your key and written down your pass phrase for future reference!

ACTION: Once this is complete, click NEXT to continue.

Items to Back Up Screen

You have now arrived at the Items to Back Up Screen and are ready to configure your first backup.

When you click Add Folder or Add File, you will be asked to navigate to the file or folder you wish to back up. Once you have determined the folder you wish to back up, click on "choose ..." If it is a file, click on "Open". If you want to add another file or folder, simply repeat the same process.

As a general rule, you do not need to back up applications (for example, programs such as WordPerfect or MS Word); however, at some point, you may wish to include your preferences folder which is found in your System Folder. The preferences folder contains specific settings for your computer that you may not wish to lose.

If you add a file or folder at this point and wish to remove it from the list, simply select it and click Remove.

Once you select an item for back up, it will appear in the white area shown above.

ACTION: Once you have done this, click NEXT to continue.

Schedule Screen

If you clicked Next, you are now at the Schedule Screen where you can establish a schedule for the folder(s) that you have just selected for back up. You will have 3 different scheduling options to choose from:

a. Do Not Schedule - select this option if you do not want to set an automatic schedule (default)
b. Execute Every - means that you can schedule your backup to perform every x number of days, weeks or months
c. Execute Every week on - here you can pick the specific day of the week that you want to perform the backup

Once you have selected one of these options, you can now enter the date and time when you wish to have the backup performed. The date is entered in the format MM/DD/YY and the time is entered using a 24 hour clock (for example, 4:00 am would be entered as 04:00 - however, 4:00 pm would be entered as 16:00 (add 12 hours).

ACTION: Enter this information and click DONE to continue.

Congratulations!

You have just successfully gone through all of the Easy Setup steps and have configured your first backup! The right-hand side of this screen will summarize some of the pertinent information that you entered throughout the Easy Setup process.

You will be able to view the backup set that you have just scheduled for back up by going to the main BackJack Console window and clicking the Back Up button. You will see a set entitled Easy Setup Set which contains the folder(s) and the schedule you set.

This Easy Setup Backup Set can be removed or changed at any time - the settings are not permanent. To learn more about making changes, see our Back Up feature.

ACTION: Once you are ready to continue, click DONE. You will now be at the main BackJack Console window.

IMPORTANT: We can't stress enough the importance of taking the time to document the pertinent information that you just entered during the Easy Setup Process.
